The Hanging Coffins at Echo Valley: Sagada, Philippines

The question always pops up. I had been to Sagada three times. Each time, I visited the Echo Valley. Each time someone always asked the guide this question: Why do locals hang coffins on the side of the cliff? Although the answers vary in small details, they are basically similar — the locals believe that the higher the coffins are, the closer they are to heaven.

Only a short walk away from the town’s main road, the Echo Valley is probably the most accessible of all the tourist spots in Sagada. We started our walk at the St. Mary Church through the Calvary hill (Mission Compound) Cemetery to get there. What welcomed us was a vista of sharp cliffs with hanging coffins affixed to one of its edge.

A small sign nailed to a pine tree caught our attention on our way to the valley. “This area is restricted for graves,” said the sign. Behind it is a gorgeous landscape: a small hill covered with grass and pine trees, and dotted with white graves of different sizes. The group agreed to take a minute to explore the graveyard. The chilly atmosphere was made eerie by the gravestones that surrounded us. Still, we hopped from one spot to another, looking for something that would spark interest. Our short stop became a long moment of reflection for us as the graves served as mirrors of how we lived our lives. It wasn’t long until our guide called us and asked us to follow him to the valley before the dark starts blanketing the site.

The mission Compound Graveyard in Sagada
On one end of the cemetery was a well-worn trail, a testament to how popular this site is to tourists. The reddish walking trail stood out in a sea of greenery. The ground was rather soft, veiled with dry pine tree leaves. The sight was a wonder in itself — pine trees standing like sentinels of the dead, the deep valley that seemed to invite us to walk down, and the limestone cliffs that rise gloriously from the ground. We could not help but snap away, trying to capture everything we laid eyes on. It was an easy walk; so easy that we actually forgot that we were traversing the side of a cliff and that one wrong step could cost us our lives. Needless to say, any tourist who will visit this place has  to watch his or her step and be careful.

Pine trees in the area

Echo Valley and the Hanging Coffins
When we finally reached the viewpoint, we stood there and just looked at the hanging coffins from afar. Our guide encouraged us to shout for it would echo. This is Echo Valley after all. We started throwing one shout after another to the other hill and heard them bounce back to us, to our delight and amusement. It was quite ironic in a way. I remember one foreign travel blogger who shared his view about shouting at the Echo Valley. He said that he found it rude to shout at the site, knowing that there were hanging coffins ahead of us and a relatively modern cemetery behind. His view was that we should keep the place quiet and peaceful as a sign of respect to the dead. I agree with him now.

Although I had been to Sagada a few times before, I have never tried going down the valley and see the hanging coffins up close. It’s not because I was scared but more like exhausted. In all three occasions, I had visited this site in late afternoon, after a trek to Bomod-ok Falls or a spelunking tour through Sumaguing Cave or Cave Connection. I just couldn’t exhaust more energy going down to the valley after a tiring day. but that gives me a reason to go back to Sagada soon.

On Board the Superstar Virgo: Singapore-Kuala Lumpur cruise

I had never been on a cruise ship before. I’m not even sure if I had seen one before. I had been on a ferry a number of times but many of them were short trips. I had spent a couple of days on a ferry once, when I was young, to general Santos City but there was nothing remotely elegant about the trip. We did not even have a personal cabin and there was nothing I could do but watch the horizon. A cruise ship complete with home entertainment facilities and buffet dining? Nah, never experienced it before. It was also my very first time in Malaysia. That’s why this trip is so special for me. It provided me many very first times. I was beyond thrilled.

Boarding the cruise Ship

When the clock hit 4pm, all of us gathered at the HarbourFront Centre. While some blog writers had just completed hours of buying at VivoCity, Winston and I came from a brief go to to books Kinokinuya in Orchard Road. We shown up just in time to inspect in our baggage.

After providing us our baggage claim stubs, we proceeded upstairs to line up for boarding. It was a long queue. thanks to my iPod and blog writer friends, I was saved from boredom. When we reached the end of the queue, we approached the immigration Counters and our passports were stamped. (Yass! another stamp!)

Afterwards, we walked all the method to the ship’s entrance. We had a few photo-ops with star Cruises’ mascot’s along the way. before stepping into the ship, our passports were collected. We would not see our passports in the next couple of days.

The cruise Card

I phone call it “the cruise Card” but I don’t understand what it is called really. It serves as your ID and passport while on the ship. It appears like your regular credit report card and it acts like it, too. On the cruise, we didn’t have to whip out cash. All we needed to do was flash this card and we were good. everything we would purchase or pay for would be charged to this card, to be settled before leaving the ship. Thankfully, everything we needed was included in the Airphil express bundle so I did not spend anything on the cruise.

The Cabin: Compact but Clever

The space assigned to us was an ocean view Stateroom on the 5th level. As the name suggests, it has a window and provides a view of the outside. The outside being the ocean most of the time.

There were four of us sharing the room. The moment I went into the room, I wondered exactly how four people could in shape as there were only 2 single beds. It was such a relief when we found that there was a pull-over bed on one side of the space and that the sofa sitting in one corner could magically transform into a bed. It was very, extremely clever! The space was arranged in such a method that could fit as much as 4 people comfortably even within the restricted space.

One of the very first things that I did when I went into our cabin was inspect the restrom. Ηταν φανταστικο. like the room, it was compact but set up in a wise way. The sink was at the center and the very first to greet the user. To the left was the toilet which makes this scarily loud flush. It was like a truly loud gulp and I felt like I’d be taken to another dimension via the toilet in an instant. (I have a vivid and rather ridiculous imagination.) and to the right was the restroom equipped with hot/cold shower.

Oh, by the way, there was cable television TV with a number of channels although none of us in the space were interested to utilize it. all of us were seldom in the room. We were just there to sleep because there was so much — SO much — that we could do outside. but there were 10 channels or so including HBO.

The only issue I encountered was that there were only a couple of outlets and there were four of us sharing a room. all of us had phones, cameras and iPods. We had to take turns.

The Amenities

What blew us away was the number of amenities inside the ship. It’s a floating hotel! A StarCruises policeman offered to provide us a tour of the ship and show us around to take a look at the facilities on board.

The Grand Piazza. After freshening up, we left the space and took the elevator to the Grand Piazza on the 7th floor. The Grand Piazza is the ship’s primary lobby where events are held and where the primary reception desk is located. The primary reception desk is like the traveler central coz this is where you avail of the a number of tours they offer, where they can assist you with your concerns, and where you inspect out.

On the other side of the piazza was a stage with a statue of three horses. around the piazza were a number of establishments — restaurants, shops, and more. On our second night on the ship, the pre-pageant for miss Resorts world Manila was held at the Grand Piazza.

The Parthenon Pool. Στην κορυφήmost level lies an outside swimming pool called the Parthenon Pool. This was where we would go whenever we felt tired and wished to take a great look of the islands. aside from the fact that it’s extremely near the Mediterranean Buffet (which I liked so much but that’s for another post), it also offers an incredible view of the ship and from the ship. There were also jacuzzi units right here but we never tried utilizing them.

On our very first night, there was Barbeque Buffet and it was a great experience. There was also a bar on the upper deck of the area.

The universal fitness center and health and wellness Club. This surprised me. I didn’t believe there’d be a fitness center on board. Although I never had the intention to utilize it, I still believe that it was a great feature. In fact, a few of our companions utilized it on our very first morning on board. They also have Aquaswim here, which is a jet current exercise pool.

Η βιβλιοθήκη. another thing I didn’t expect to see inside a cruise ship. I was expecting casinos and theaters and a ton of restaurants but NOT a library. but I super liked the idea! They even had chairs by the window. staying right here was extremely relaxing and it was an oasis amidst the extremely busy activities outside. They have wi-fi right here but I didn’t catch the rates.

Other Facilities. There so many other amenities that this ship offers. They even have a Mahjong Room! They have salons, computer centers, video arcade, child care center, and many others. On my next post, I will talk about the food and home entertainment on board. The ship also homes all kind of restaurants offering worldwide cuisines! They also have a theater.

Photography is not enabled when the show is on so I have no pics of the performances, just the stage.
Dining

Τρώει. most likely my favorite activity in the world. and it’s even more enjoyable on cruise! On board the SuperStar Virgo from Singapore to Port Klang, Malaysia, I discovered myself eating most of the time! To hell with my tummy, I would enjoy the many gastronomic delights aboard this lovely cruise ship!

SuperStar Virgo homes a number of restaurants serving a range of worldwide cuisines. From fine dining to buffet restos, you’ll find something that caters to your taste. The Airphil express Fly and Sail bundle includes free meals from three restaurants — Bella Vista (international), Mediterranean Buffet (halal certified), and The pavilion (Chinese). This means that you won’t be charged if you eat at any of these three restaurants.

It was Barbeque night on our very first night on the cruise and they set up a barbeque buffet by the pool! Φοβερός! perfect for gluttons like me! among the many dishes were grilled beef, squid, and sausages, and steamed corn among others. dessert and soup were also overflowing; it was indeed a pig-out moment for me. For a moment, I declared that day (and the next 2 days) my cheat days from my non-existent weight-loss diet.

Barbeque buffet!
When we shown up from the tour the next day, we headed to the Bella Vista for dinner. There was a dress code (smart casual/semi-formal). They served a five-course dinner, which was part of the package. right here are some snapshots of what I had for dinner that night!

Salmon (main course), Greek salad (appetizer), and Cheese and biscuits (dessert). Sorry about the high quality of the photos. It was a bit dark inside the restaurant.
Aside from the Mediterranean Buffet and Terrace, the Pavilion, and Bella Vista, here’s a listing of the other restaurants on board.

Noble home (Chinese cuisine, fine dining)

The Taj (Indian buffet – halal)

Samurai restaurant (Japanese food)

Blue Lagoon (Southeast Asian food)

Palazzo (Italian combination restaurant)

The Taverna (Snack bar)

Bellini (Liquor bar)

Café Gelato (desserts!)

I can’t state anything about them coz I wasn’t able to try what they had to offer.

There was a charm pageant happening at the Grand Piazza — miss Resorts world Manila. but since we weren’t into pageants, Hannah, Winston, Marcos and I selected to return to the Lido movie theater for another free show. This time, it was a magic-slash-comedy-slash-magic show. It was cool. especially when Philipart, the magician-slash-comedian-slash-singer-slash-host was enabled us to have a short photo-op with him. :ΡΕ

After the show, we returned to Mediterranean Buffet for supper (midnight snack). Again, the meal was part of the bundle so we weren’t charged extra for this.

8 tourist Attractions from Champs-Élysées to The Louvre: A Paris walking tour

With a paper plate of chocolate-banana chocolat banane waffle in one hand, I surveyed the park for a vacant seat and found one punctuating a grove of manicured trees. Sweet, I whispered as I pulled a chair and settled. The scene was just as cliché as I imagined, but, heck, I was loving it. I was enjoying waffles in one corner of the Tuileries garden and listening to Lana del Rey while keeping my eyes on that pointy metal structure that poked the Parisian sky — the Eiffel Tower.

View of the Eiffel Tower from one edge of the Tuileries Garden
But the world-famous landmark would have to wait at that point. It was my first day in Paris, and the tower was not yet part of the plan. That afternoon was reserved for Champs-Élysées, ending here at the Tuileries Garden. just in front of me was place de la Concorde, Paris’s largest public square. The place is serene now. Over 200 years ago, however, it was the site of one of the most important events in French history. This was where King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were executed by guillotine. Today, the only commotion that occurs here is that of tourists finding a good spot for a quick rest after hours of sightseeing.

My walk began at the other end of Champs-Élysées, a 1.9-km long boulevard that connects place de la Concorde and place Charles de Gaulle. A stroll along the famed avenue introduces many of the city’s most popular tourist spots. here are some of them.

1. Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe has its own metro station called Charles-de-Gaulle-Étoile, making it an optimal start of a walking tour. Smack at the center of place Charles de Gaulle in the 8th arrondissement, it enables a terrific view of Champs-Élysées.

Looks small but…
Voila. It’s a pretty colossal structure.
The Arc is one of the most iconic monuments in Paris. Erected between 1806 and 1836, it was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte after the victory at Austerlitz and was designed by Jean Chalgrin in honor of those who fought at the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. names of generals and all French victories are inscribed on the structure.

I had a foolish impression before coming here that the arc was small (I don’t know why) and was, thus, surprised to be greeted by a Neoclassical mammoth. It measures 50 meters in height, 45 meters in length, and 22 meters in width.

2. Champs-Élysées

The boulevard itself is worth a look. Each year, it plays host to many Bastille Day (July 14) events including a military parade. On regular days, it boasts rectangular groves that fringe a maze of retail shops, theaters, and restaurants.

Champs Elysees is one busy road.
Pavement restaurants amid tree groves
Champs Elysees is flanked by fashion shops and boutiques.
So tempted to just run around and disturb their peace, haha
There was a time when Champs-Élysées was just a flat shade of green on the map: fields and gardens. The initial plan, made by André Le Nôtre in 1667, pegged the site to be just an extension of the nearby Tuileries Garden. Over centuries, it has evolved into one of the most famous and most fashionable streets in the world.

3. fashion Stores

The area has become synonymous with shopping. shopping has been ingrained in its history, starting in 1860 when the merchants along the boulevard established an association. now called Comité Champs-Élysées, “it is the oldest standing committee in Paris,” according to my good pal Wikipedia.

Flagship store of Louis Vuitton
Popular brands and luxury labels are all here, including the flagship store of Louis Vuitton, which stands proudly on the southern side of the road.

4. Grand Palais

Another important historic site along Champs-Élysées is the Grand Palais, a “monument dedicated by the Republic to the glory of French art.” The grand, imposing structure edifice houses an exhibition hall and a museum complex. The Beaux-Arts beauty also serves as the venue for many of Chanel’s fashion shows.

As viewed from Champs Elysees
Built in 1897, the palace wears a blend of classical and Art Nouveau designs, most evident in its stone facade and ironwork, as well as in its grand staircase. the most appealing are its glass barrel-vaulted roofs, framed by light steel, allowing natural light in.

Just across the Grand Palais is the Petit Palais.

5. Jardins des Champs-Élysées

At this point, you’ll probably be exhausted from all the hours of walking. fret not! beyond the groves of trees that line the avenue are pockets of greens, perfect for a brief rest. Some statues and fountains adorn the gardens. but you might want to spend a few euros on a serving of crepe from the unassuming stalls that hide under the foliage.

7. Tuileries Garden

FLYING HIGH IN new ZEALAND’S FIORDLAND

Posted: 4/5/18 | April 5th, 2018

“How do you do on boats?”

“I like ’em,” I stated gripping the seat of the airplane tightly.

“Well, just photo turbulence as waves you can’t see,” the pilot stated with a laugh.

“I understand turbulence can’t take down a plane, however that doesn’t make this any type of much more comfortable,” I retorted with a glare.

The airplane jolted as we passed some high mountains. None of the other passengers seemed to notice, however I cringed with the look of somebody who just got a thousand needles stuck in his arm.

“If something goes wrong here, we just autumn as well as die! That’s just where my mind goes!”

The pilot looked at me, laughed again, as well as went back to speaking to the other passengers.

I was in a tiny, six-seater seaplane three thousand feet above skeptical Sound. Fiordland is found in the southwesternmost part of new Zealand as well as house to various Lord of the Rings film locations, the region is thought about one of the country’s many beautiful as well as remote areas.

Filled with enormous mountains, deep lakes, swelling rivers, untamed forests, as well as resplendent fjords, many of it has never been set upon by man. save a few locations where boats as well as planes can go, the government has made the land off-limits, ensuring that that will be the situation for a long time to come.

The day before, I had had the bright concept of seeing skeptical noise on a quick one-hour flight instead of a full-day bus/boat ride. I was running low on schedule and, in spite of my worry of heights as well as flying, I might only believe of saving time as well as the views that I’d see.

Yet, as the teeny airplane bounced around, the concept no longer seemed so bright.

Days earlier, I had hitched a trip to the area with Karin, a Swedish woman I’d satisfied in Wanaka. After a few days partying in Queenstown, we had driven down to the region’s introducing pad, Te Anau, a little town of barely a few hundred people on a lake. It’s the gateway for tourists who concerned camp, hike the Kepler Track as well as Milford noise trail, as well as see the area’s two most significant attractions: Milford noise as well as skeptical Sound.

Karin as well as I drove as much as Milford noise for the day. On the way, we passed huge granite mountains, crystal-clear blue rivers, as well as roaring waterfalls. sheer cliffs increased above us as we complied with the road to the sound. small lakes dotted the way, as well as hiking tracks — a few of the country’s “Great Walks” — crisscrossed the area.

This was wild new Zealand, where cellphone service didn’t exist, you had to camp, and, to quote Doc Brown, “you don’t requirement roads.” You came right here for one reason: to getaway city life.

On our two-hour cruise on Milford noise to the edge of the Tasman Sea as well as back again, water from the recent rains rushed in a torrent off the sides of the fjord, ice-covered the tops of the mountains, as well as seals frolicked nearby. It was a clear, bright, sunny day, the kind that makes you feel like you got the luckiest card in the traveler’s deck.

The next day, Karin left however I stayed on to keep exploring. I headed to Wings as well as Water, a little seaplane business run by Jim, a hard-nosed pilot who had a great deal to state about the specify of contemporary pilot training as well as airplane safety. He spouted off about the nanny specify as well as government policy not letting pilots be pilots, business outsourcing maintenance, the overreliance on computers as well as technology, as well as pilots not choosing their digestive tracts enough.

“There’s not sufficient experience out there. A computer isn’t going to save you.”

He had strong opinions on every subject.

We headed to the airplane to greet the other passengers.

“Matt is scared of flying, however we’ll make him a man,” he stated to the two other couples waiting to board our flight, slapping my back as he went to do one more security inspect on the plane.

I already regretted discussing my worry of flying.

With a sputter of the engine, we coasted on the water as well as ascended smoothly into the air. Now, below us, the huge Lake Te Anau as well as mountains were splayed out over the landscape. There were lakes leaking down the sides of mountains, patches of ice dotting inaccessible mountaintops, as well as sheer, gray cliffs with trees seemingly hanging on by a root, prepared to slide off at a moment’s notice. We weaved so carefully around the mountains I felt I might touch them.

As the clouds rolled in, I ended up being nervous. With clouds came wind as well as choppier air.

“How do you understand when to turn back? like is there a point when you go, ‘OK, time to go!’?”

“You just understand from experience,” Jim replied.

“What occurs if the weather condition worsens?”

“Well, you see those huge bodies of water down there?”

“Ναι…”

“Well, we’re inένα υδροπλάνο.

TALISAY BEACH: El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

Water is stated to be the most important compound to life. All living things requirement water. All living things, yes, including travelers. Swimming, snorkeling, running around, as well as more swimming are exhausting activities that must be enjoyed by those who will go on a whole-day island-hopping adventure. as well as to make it through this day, one should not fail to remember to bring a bottle of WATER.

I did. I did forget.

Why does it always occur to me?

But I’m getting ahead of the story.

Ανανάς! as well as inside, Spongebob! ΔΕΝ.
After our semi-spiritual go to to Matinloc Shrine, we hopped back onto the boat as well as glided a number of meters to a close-by white beach. I’m not sure however I believe most of the beaches we saw as well as passed by are all part of Matinloc Island. It was a dazzling sight — gray cliffs topped with rich eco-friendlies as well as at the base, sparkling white sand welcoming the waves. We didn’t understand which beach we were headed to however we’d be absolutely happy with any type of of them.

Talisay Beach, El Nido, Palawan
Talisay beach was our boatman’s choice. I state “our boatman’s choice” since it seemed like each boat would dock at a separate beach. It was like we had the beach as well as I’m sure the group of tourists on the other beaches felt the same.

When we lastly climbed down our boats as well as soaked our feet, my buddy Ces just lay down as if dropping dead. She just discovered the like of her life — the sand. Pearly white sand.

Soon, our boatman revealed that they would be preparing lunch.

The regional government of El Nido standardizes the tour operations in the town. There are rules as well as policies that tour operators, boatmen, as well as resort owners must abide by. one of them is that all whole-day trips must include LUNCH.

They even go extremely specific. Lunch should comprise the following:

Grilled meat (chicken or pork)

The finest thing about our lunch was that it was prepared as well as cooked at the beach itself. While we were basking in the sun as well as swimming, our boatmen transformed into island chefs.

We had grilled fish, grilled liempo, as well as cucumber for lunch. as well as for dessert, pineapples as well as bananas! The food was OK. There was nothing spectacular about it. It was just grilled, however we did not expect anything, anyway.

Tropical island lunch! whatever grilled as well as fresh!
There was as well much food, to be honest. It was as well much even for us. however since we didn’t want all that food to go to waste, we truly tried to surface it as well as leave nothing however bones. We were extremely satisfied.

Now, if you take a second look at the “lunch” elements I listed above, there’s no water there. So hmmmm.

“Kuya, may tubig po kayo,” I asked one of the boatmen.

“Ay naku, wala,” responded to Kuya. “Bakit? Wala kayong dalang tubig?”

“Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah,” yes, I truly stated it. “Wala po.” as well as then I laughed hard. I believe I was going crazy. When the group discovered that there was no water, none of us threw tantrums or felt bad. We just laughed it off. The location was just so gorgeous as well as the moment was so wonderful to be spoiled. as well as our boatmen had been nothing however useful as well as endearing. No blames here.

But the issue was triggered by a miscommunication between us as well as the tour agency. The company guaranteed us that they would be providing water. I assumption it was just not cascaded to the boatmen.

We were lucky since our boatmen were truly the very best in the world. They went out of their method to cross to the other beach as well as “borrow” water from the other boat.

My buddies enjoying the beach, the sea, as well as the view!
We stayed for one more hour at Talisay beach after lunch. At one point, all of us in the group were just sitting on the sand, viewing the waves roll by as well as admiring the view. None of us stated a word. We just sat there with our feet playing with the bubbles that the waves pushed towards us. It took a number of minutes up until somebody lastly stated something — “It’s beautiful.”

EL NIDO PALAWAN travel guide with sample schedule & budget

Last updated: 9 MARCH 2020

Here’s our diy EL NIDO PALAWAN travel guide BLOG! In this post, you’ll find sample EL NIDO ITINERARIES, breakdown of expenses, and recommendations on hotels, resorts, tours, and things to do. hope this helps you plan your next Palawan trip!

When I was a child and conjured up an image of a tropical paradise in a daydream, this looked exactly like this world.

When our boat glided through the waves, it was as though we sailed into a karst world straight from a fantasy film. As we moved closer, the cliffs appeared to magically part, as if ushering us in, inviting us to come in and see what the island had to offer. As we moved, these splendid huge rocks slowly revealed white, sparkling beaches adorned with coconut trees. In this world, “ugly” is either banned or non-existent. (Then I thought, “Holy eff, what am I doing here?”)

“This is my Narnia,” I mumbled to myself, thinking that the numerous years I had spent in the closet finally paid off. I chuckled.

How I got here was a matter of fate. El Nido was nowhere under my radar at the time. I was under a foolish impression that only the dirty rich could afford it. but as I was simply browsing the web, I chanced upon a piso sale. I wasn’t enslaved by travel then. A full-time corporate job had the whip in a tight grip. but it was the ideal moment. A classic corporate-slave-meets-freedom moment. Every tension that work had brought me over the past few weeks was blown away by the wind, washed away by the waves of El Nido.

Back then, El Nido was a bit different. It wasn’t as crowded or as developed. I could walk down the length of the town’s main street without running into another tourist. Back then, it wasn’t easy to reach. There weren’t that numerous flights, and the ride from Puerto Princesa would eat up over seven hours on a half-unpaved road.

But as I stood in the middle of it, I knew this would be the first of my numerous affairs with El Nido. Over the next few years, El Nido would be my go-to place whenever I needed a little bit of uplifting, even despite not being easily accessible. I returned practically every year. That’s the thing about El Nido: it’s playing hard-to-get. but it’s the kind of destination you’d want to marry.

UNDERSTANDING EL NIDO

The municipality of El Nido encompasses the northernmost suggestion of the main island of Palawan and the 45 rocky islands dotting Bacuit Bay. A protected area, El Nido is a treasure trove of marine life and spectacular seascape, earning it a consistent place among the best beach destinations in the world.

Although a first-class municipality, El Nido remains a quiet town. The town proper is tiny, with very few big establishments other than small travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, and stores. The nearest city is Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan, which is five hours away.

Together with Coron and Puerto Princesa, El Nido is part of the popular tourism triumvirate in Palawan. These are the three many went to destinations in the province. El Nido sits in the middle, available from both Coron to its north and Puerto Princesa to its south.

WHERE TO stay IN EL NIDO

Best area to stay in El Nido

El Nido’s poblacion is composed of four barangays (villages): Buena Suerte, Corong-Corong, Maligaya, and Masagana.

Buena Suerte.

Corong-Corong.

Beach Calaan (Masagana).

Hostel Designer Hostel.

(Double check the time before you book because this might change.)
Fare: P850.

Travel time is typically 5-6 hours. based on experience, these vans are fast. That’s both a good thing and a bad thing. I in some cases find myself saying a silent prayer in the middle of the journey. and I’m not even religious!

Regular fare is typically between P550 and P600. However, Fort Wally in some cases brings the cost down to P450 when they have a promo. Locals typically get a discount.

Some of these vans don’t leave until they’re full. but it doesn’t take that long these days.

All van journeys stop halfway for a quick restroom and snack break.

The bus is another option. It’s my preferred option, actually. Buses are much more comfortable now than before, much more comfortable than the vans (at least in my opinion). larger legroom, cooler temperature, and just bigger breathing space overall. The downside: it’s slower, taking 6-7 hours. and there are fewer journeys per day. but if you’re not in a big hurry, it’s a terrific option.

Here’s how to take the bus to El Nido.

Walk to the gate of the airport.

Hail a tricycle and ask to be taken to San Jose Terminal. Fare is P120 per ride. Split the cost if you’re a group. Alternatively, you can take a trike+jeepney combo, which is cheaper. but because I’m guessing you have heavy bags in tow, just go straight to the San Jose Terminal.

Board a bus to El Nido.

Two bus companies to choose from: RoRo Bus and Cherry Bus.

RoRo Bus
Ordinary: P290
Airconditioned: P380
Operating hours: 5am-9pm
Frequency: Every 2 hours

Cherry Bus
Ordinary: P385
Airconditioned: P480
Operating hours: 4am-10pm
Frequency: Every 2 hours

Both buses will make several stops along the way to pick up much more passengers, the longest will be in Roxas.

The bus will terminate at the station in El Nido.

Coron to El Nido

Montenegro Fastcraft launched in September 2016 a new Coron-El Nido (and vice versa) route, which cuts the travel time to only 4 hours. schedule and rates below.

EL NIDO TOURS

One terrific thing about El Nido is that many essential attractions, especially the islands and beaches, are grouped into trip packages. The trips are also regulated and standardized. Boatmen and travel agencies should abide by the guidelines and guidelines that they set in purchase to offer a smoother and much more consistent service to tourists. A price ceiling is in effect, which implies trip operators cannot sell trips at rates higher than what has been set by the government.

The two many went to spots in El Nido are the small Lagoon and big Lagoon of Miniloc Island, both used to be part of trip A, which covers Miniloc Island. For the longest time, trip A was the most popular island tour, attracting much more tourists than all the other three by a mile. In effect, these sites are prone to overcrowding. To address the problem, in November 2018, the local government split the two apart and reassigned small Lagoon to trip D.

If you’re alone or a small group, you will be merged with other smaller groups to fill a boat. If you want a private boat, you can charter one too.

These guidelines apply:

You can check out only one premium spot per day. premium spots are: big Lagoon (Tour A), small Lagoon (Tour D), and secret beach (Tour C). You can’t check out big Lagoon and secret Lagoon on the same day. You can’t check out secret beach and small Lagoon on the same day, either. combination trips are now prohibited.

Pre-registration is required for visitors going to small Lagoon, big Lagoon, or secret Beach. This allows the government to monitor and manage the volume of tourists. To register, just give your name and contact details to the trip operator when you b

HOW TO get THE support OF YOUR pals and family

Updated: 6/21/20 | June 21st, 2020

Once a month, Kristin Addis from Be My travel Muse writes a guest column featuring ideas and recommendations on solo female travel. It’s an crucial topic I can’t adequately cover, so I brought in an expert to share her advice. This month’s column is about taking care of unsupportive pals and family who think you’ll end up like the motion picture Taken.

I swallowed hard as I sat across from her, hoping the news would discuss smoothly. I’d been sitting on the information for months and had finally worked up the courage to tell her.

“Mom,” I began, “I’m quitting my job to travel the world.” I held my breath and wished I could hide behind something while she considered the news.

“How fun!”

I was stunned.

There was no questioning, no criticism, and no attempt to talk me out of it. I had her support. It was a substantial relief and, now that she knew, I could tell the rest of the world too.

Have you found yourself in the same position? You’re dying to travel the world. You’ve made a decision not to wait until a friend, family member, or significant other can join you because if you did, you might be waiting forever. You’re pumped up for the road ahead, but just one thing looms in your way — telling everyone else in your life that you’re going to be gone for a while, all by yourself, on the other side of the world.

One of the greatest sources of worry people have is breaking the news to pals and family. They may ask you, “What about your career? What about your boyfriend/lease/cat/garage band? must you really be out in this big scary world alone? It’s not safe for women to travel. Aren’t you anxious about ending up like in that motion picture ‘Taken’?”

Their worries are only natural, and it’s best to plan on a mix of reactions, just in case they’re not all completely positive and encouraging like my mother was.

So, when you get negative feedback, how do you deal with their criticisms and concerns? What happens when your pals and family don’t support your trip? What do you do when your parents don’t want you to travel?

Here is my recommendations on how to deal with unsupportive pals and family – and win them over:

Make sure You’re Committed

If you’re not entirely sure about your decision to travel solo, it’ll be much easier for concerned pals and family to talk you out of it. Don’t just come up with a half-baked idea and tell everyone that you might be considering traveling alone.

On the other hand, does the dream of traveling keep you awake at night (in a good way)? Are you a lot more ecstatic about exploring the world than anything else in your life ideal now?

Have you looked into the cost to travel the world?

Are you dedicated enough to save up the required funds?

If so, you’ve likely committed to making your travel dreams a reality. Now, you need to turn your desire into a plan.

Have a solid Plan

Sit down and plan out every detail so that when you encounter doubters you can come back with information to address their concerns. show your pals and family how much time and thought you’ve put into your trip. It’s much easier to put your parents and pals at ease if you have a well-thought-out plan and are absolutely prepared.

Hopefully, also your passion will be infectious, and once they see how much it indicates to you, they’ll be a lot more supportive.

When I asked my mother what made her support my decision so quickly, she responded that she saw how well I had planned my trip and knew from that alone how much it indicated to me and how severe I was about it.

I had shown her examples of other solo travelers out doing the same thing, given her a rough itinerary, and spoke to her at length about what the trip would entail. I had told her the countries I planned to visit, pointed her to the blogs I had been reading, and shared my budget plan.

She got to feel like she was part of it rather than just an afterthought. That put her a lot more at ease.

Be ready for any questions they might throw at you!

Let the Numbers Do the Talking

A girl shouldn’t be out traveling alone; it’s a scary world out there” is a action you’re likely to hear. parents naturally want their child to be safe and often concern that being a woman on her own abroad is a lot more hazardous than it is at home. but the reality is, whatever you’ve done so far in life to stay alive is relevant abroad as well.

I also find it valuable to point out that solo female travel is on the rise — it’s not so odd anymore. A google search on “solo female travel” now yields back millions of results. reports after reports have shown that there is now a shift in the travel industry to deal with solo female travelers.

It’s not just young women who travel solo, the trend has even amplified across generations. This indicates a lot more women-only excursions and a lot more opportunities to meet and connect with other solo female travelers on the road and even online.

Do your research and show your pals and family that you are fully prepared and aware of what you are getting yourself into. assure them that you will not be the only one out there and that you are confident in your decision.

You’re just a Phone call Away

Part of the negative reactions will a lot of likely have to make with your pals and family fearing that they won’t be able to get in touch with you. They may be envisioning jungles and remote places where only old-fashioned snail mail is available. That may have been true 20-30 years ago, but these days Wi-Fi is everywhere. even when it’s not, local SIM cards are easy to find.

It’s also much easier than ever to stay connected with apps that allow messaging, chatting, and video calling for free, such as Facebook, Skype, Zoom, Viber, KakaoTalk, and WhatsApp. too lots of pals and family to update your travels? Share photos and videos on your social media and keep everyone in the loop. It’s also a terrific way to share your happiness and who knows? It might be so infectious that your pals and family would consider doing the same!

International phone plans are also available from T-Mobile without the large price tag. This indicates that anywhere that you can at least get cell reception, you’ll be reachable. You’ll genuinely be just a phone call away during the majority of your trip.

Ask For Their depend on and Support

If all else fails, turn it around. Your parents raised a child with a good head on her shoulders, didn’t they? Ask them, “Don’t you think I’m capable?” If the answer is “yes,” then end the conversation.

If the answer is “no,” then ask for the reason behind the no. chances are they won’t really come up with one — no parent wants to tell their child they don’t think they can succeed.

Males and females both have to look after their safety, and your gender doesn’t inhibit your ability to travel. Do they not depend on you, love you, and want you to live a life that is fulfilling? must they stop you from living your own life?

Chances are when put this way, your loved ones will realize that you’re a capable adult and know not to intentionally do silly things to put yourself in harm’s way.

Remember: It’s Your Decision

It can be pretty disappointing when you’re so ecstatic about the prospect of your big trip, and the most crucial people around you aren’t supportive of it.

When I quit my job to travel by myself, a lot of people were left scratching their heads, anxious I was going through a quarter-life crisis and burning bridges behind me. They just didn’t understand a life outside of the one they were living, and they weren’t comfortable with that kind of risk in their own lives.

I’ve come to realize that when people express a negative viewpoint about the decisions made by others, it’s normally their own insecurities talking.

Worried pals and family are not necessarily a bad thing, though. It indicates that there are people out there who love and care about you, and who want you around. It’s only natural and probably inevitable. In time, as they see you blossom on your trip, having adventures and stunning experiences to last a lifetime, they’ll become a lot more comfortable with the idea.

There are always naysayers, but they don’t have to hold you back from living out your own life. You only get one, and it’s yours to do what you wish. You might as well spend it chasing a dream rather than letting the fears of others hold you back.

When it comes down to it, with or without cheers from everyone in your corner, you just have to take the first step, and go.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, “You’re off to terrific Places! Your mountain is waiting, so…get on your way!”

2. Surf στο San Juan del Sur

Plus, they have a cool bar and huge lockers to store all your stuff. You can book a room here on Hostelworld!

4. visit “new” León

This city was Nicaragua’s capital until 1857. To this day it remains the country’s intellectual capital and is home to the national University. Remnants of the political war between the Somozas and Sandinistas can be seen in the graffiti and murals around the city. There are a lot of churches here, lots of art museums, and a burgeoning food movement.

Make sure you visit the museum of the Revolution, a fascinating museum about the Sandinista movement. The $2 entrance fee includes a guide. León is also where people base themselves for trips to the nearby volcanoes. This city was one of the highlights of my trip.

Where to stay in León: My favorite place to stay is Poco a Poco. A fully-equipped kichen, rooftop area, tons of hammocks, and comfy beds make this award-winning hostel an awesome place to stay at.

5. visit “old” León

The ruins of León Viejo date back to the 16th century and are a short trip from León. The site is Nicaragua’s only UNESCO world Heritage providing and is one of the oldest Spanish colonial settlements in the Americas. While this isn’t some extravagant spoil site, it’s really the only place to see and learn about the country’s founding colonial past.

6. Go volcano boarding

Cerro Negro, a young and active volcano, is where tourists (mostly backpackers) board down the gravelly slopes on one of the lots of organized excursions to the mountain. You hike up to the top, which takes around an hour, sit on a piece of wood, and then fly down the side of the volcano. excursions from León leave in the morning and in the afternoon.

It’s the main reason lots of travelers visit León and, while not my cup of tea, is very popular. I couldn’t visit anywhere in the country without seeing someone wearing an “I went volcano boarding” t-shirt. the most popular slope is on Cerro Negro. prices start at $25 USD per person.

7. escape to the Corn Islands

Located off the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, the Corn Islands are a stunning place for a holiday retreat. a lot of people come to the islands to snorkel, scuba dive, fish, soak up the sun, and kick back with a good book. There are two islands: little Corn and big Corn. little Corn is the quieter, a lot more backpacker-oriented island with more affordable guesthouses and fewer resorts.

You can fly or take a ferry to big Corn and then a smaller boat to little Corn. big Corn is a lot more developed with larger resorts and a lot more restaurants, and it’s a lot more expensive. Home to around 800 people speaking Creole English and Spanish, this is one the most friendly places you’re likely to find in the country!

Where to stay on the Corn Islands: My favorite place to stay is Mimundo. The hostel is ideal on the water and you can enjoy the sunrise and sunset from your balcony. What a lot more do you need?

8. Hike Miraflores
Located in Esteli in northern Nicaragua, this national park was the highlight of my entire trip. You get to wander through a beautiful cloud forest, around small farms, and over rivers and waterfalls. You’ll hardly run into any other tourists — it’s like you have the whole jungle to yourself. You can take daylong or multiday treks to the park (the multiday trips enable you to stay with local host families in small communities). There are also programs to help you learn to farm or show here.

Here’s a video of the area:

I did a one-day trek ($15 USD for two meals and a mandatory guide), which started at 7am and concluded around 4pm. Bonus: all the money from the excursions goes back into supporting the community and farmers.

9. visit the stone Man

Alberto Gutiérrez has been carving animals and symbols into the stones outside Esteli for decades. He had a vision of angels who told him to carve, and in an effort to end his alcoholism, began carving whenever he craved a drink. He’s not easy to get to, but when you find him, Alberto will welcome you into his home, give you fresh fruit, and show you all his stone carvings, which he says were inspired by God. He doesn’t speak any English, so if you don’t speak Spanish, just nod and take pleasure in the carvings. He also won’t ask for any money, but donations are welcome. This is a really great “off-the-beaten-path destination.”

(Special thanks to Rodney McDonald, director of ERSLA (a fantastic nonprofit that sets up fire departments in the country), for taking me there and introducing me!)

Directions: Getting there is a bit complicated. To visit Alberto Gutiérrez, take a bus or taxi to the Tisey Estanzuela natural Reserve. Ask to be dropped off at the the entrance to El Calejate or Eco Posada. If you are dropped off at Eco Posada (where you can get lunch, buy drinks, etc.), keep walking up the road and eventually you’ll come to a big clearing on your left with a well-worn road going slightly down the λόφος. There will be a sign that says “El Calejate.” Go down this path, admire the sensational view, and then veer left down the footpath down the hill. keep walking and you will see a sign that says “Bienvenidos a Galeria Esculturas en Piedras.” cross the wooden gate and start calling out. Alberto will come out to greet you.

10. skip Managua – There’s nothing toΔες εδώ. step along. Don’t spend a lot of time there.

11. Hike some volcanoes

There are a lot of volcanoes in the country, and hiking them is a popular activity. It was the main reason why I headed to Nicaragua, and I ended up hiking three. The two volcanoes on Ometepe are popular day hikes. They’re a lot a lot more challenging then you’ll be led to believe, but worth it (look out for monkeys!). León is probably the best place to do some hiking, though, considering that there are a lot of volcanoes there.

If you’re seeking to get your hiking fix, this is where to do it! the most popular volcanoes are Cerro Negro (volcano boarding), Telica (where you choose sunset hikes), San Cristóbal (the longest and hardest), and Momotombo (second hardest).

12. Binge on gallo pinto

I’ll be honest: I found Nicaraguan food pretty bland. Be prepared to eat a lot of gallo pinto (rice and beans), meat, and fried plantains. It’s not the most exciting food, but it was delicious (and incredibly economical). However, after eating it for three days straight, I broke down and went to a Western restaurant. A man can only eat so much rice and beans before he needs something different. It is a staple food for a lot of people in Nicaragua. In fact, Gallo Pinto is such a quintessential part of Nicaraguan cuisine that even McDonald’s has a version!

13. Do a homestay/Learn Spanish
Want to stay longer? Take part in a homestay. There are a lot of opportunities to stay longer, volunteer, learn Spanish, and farm. If this interests you, hostels and vacationer offices in any big city can help organize this for you. Esteli, Ometepe, and León were popular destinations for this.

14. visit Apoyo Lagoon

Though lots of people visit Lake Nicaragua (the greatest and where Ometepe is), this lagoon near Managua is a great spot to relax. You can sail on the lake, fish, and hike around. It’s a beautiful part of the country.

15. kick back – Nicaragua is a great country to just hang out in. sit on a beach with a good book, kick back in the jungle, stay on the farm, surf, or swing in a hammock. The pace of life here is slow and relaxed, so slow yourself down and take pleasure in some lazy, terrific days.

Nicaragua is fast becoming the new Costa Rica in terms of tourism, and I highly recommend a visit to this country before it becomes “too touristy” and expensive. I see the writing on the wall: this place is going to explode with tourists even a lot more than it has already. Nicaragua is a nature lover’s dream: volcanoes, rainforests, mangrove forests, and beaches abound. add in some adventurous activities, friendly locals, and cheap prices, and you’ll see why everyone raves about this country.

There is so much to see and do in the country that you’re going to have an action-packed trip no matter where you go or how long you stay there. let this guide on what to see and do in Nicargua let you experience the magic the country has to offer.

Because it’s one of the best countries in the world and must not be missed! I can’t speak highly of it enough!
