After 5 amazing months of living in Grenada, we have moved on. even though it was a extremely emotional goodbye last year, in a way, it was harder to leave this year since we were that much much more connected to the people, the animals as well as our life there.

Walk around Castello

This is one of the four historic neighbourhoods of Cagliari, which is located on a hill from where an fantastic 180 degree view can be admired. Established in the 13th century by the Pisans, it is a fortified area that has 3 towers (San Pancrazio, dell’Elefante and Cristina), used to be surrounded by a wall, has a bastion and is where the beautiful Cathedral can be found. Castello is rich in art galleries, museums and places of interest, but if you are on a budget, a walk in this incredibly pretty area will give you the chance to breathe in the old history of the city. You can also enjoy some spectacular panoramas over the Gulf of the Angels, the Devil’s settle which characterizes Cagliari’s Poetto beach, and other neighbourhoods such as Stampace and Villanova.

One of the greatest traditions of Sardinia, can actually be viewed for free on the 1st of may each year -be prepared to stand in the crowd for a few hours, but it is worth it. In 2015, Sant’Efisio celebrations will reach their 359th edition. On this occasion, the statue of Sant’Efisio - a saint who is believed to have saved the island from the plague – is paraded across town, arriving 50 kms away at the village of Pula. people come to parade in their beautiful traditional costumes from all over Sardinia.

Go for a run at Poetto’s Beach

..or at least a walk! Whether you visit Cagliari in the summer or in the winter, you can’t miss Poetto, our beloved city beach. It stretches for over 8 km, and on windy days it is a paradise for kite surfers. This is also where lots of summer festivals and concerts are held and where the locals go regularly for their daily exercise, or for a coffee, a drink or a walk, whatever the season.

Admire the pink flamingos and other wildlife at Parco di Molentargius

You don’t have to fly to the hidden corners of the world to see some of the most fantastic wildlife in the world. Cagliari is at the heart of the Mediterranean, and since the air is so clean here, it is the only place in Europe where pink flamingos nest. It seems they have found the perfect place to settle! A walk at the Park of Molentargius will get you close enough to snap some incredible pictures of these pink birds.

Hike Sella del Diavolo:

This is an easy, half day trek in town, which will allow you to gaze at the incredible view over Cagliari and Poetto beach from above, and see the ruins of the fort and tower of Sant’Elia along the way. It can be done freely and independently, and during the summer months, on full moon days, there are also night excursions.

Needless to say, there is much more to do in town - this is just for starters!

disappointment was painted all over my face when I found out that the room we got was not facing the sea. Not that I am a sucker for beachfront rooms but the view of White Island lying just a few kilometers from the shore would have been the icing on the cake. Regardless, our 2-night stay at Paras beach resort in general was anything but disappointing. It was still a very pleasant experience.

The receptionist was all smiles when we arrived at the resort, giving the poor Traveler and his friend a drink while they were completing cleaning up the room we booked. She invited us to have a seat while we waited but we were like wigglers in the water, trying to check out the different parts of the resort out of excitement.

It didn’t take long for us to notice that it wouldn’t be a good idea to swim by the resort’s beach area since it was very, very narrow and even disappeared altogether when high tide hit. It wasn’t a problem for us, though, because we easily spotted that glittering white paradise not far from the resort — White Island. It was a very tempting sight.

We walked by the pool for a couple of minutes and headed back to the reception, where we saw a brochure compiling the tours that Paras beach resort offers its guests. earlier that morning, we already asked the driver of the multi-cab we were on how much the whole-day tour usually costs and upon seeing the resort’s brochure, we knew we’d have to just get tour services elsewhere. Paras’s rates were more than double the price the driver told us.

We originally wanted an economy room but they were all taken at the time. We decided to just book the superior room instead for P2,500 per night. Please note that these rates have already changed. They even changed the names of their rooms. I think their superior rooms are what they call Amihan rooms now.

On the way to the room, we had a glimpse of the mighty Hibok-hibok, standing within view from the hotel’s side alley and balcony. We hit the bed as soon as the door opened. There were two beds — 1 queen size and 1 single — and it could actually accommodate up to three, or even more. As I picked the remote control of the cable TV that sat in front of the beds, I noticed just how big and spacious the room was — to our satisfaction. We loved, loved, loved it.

Blue, coral-themed comforters covered the beds. They smelled crisp and fresh and clean. One thing I dislike about many of the hotels and resorts I had tried before was that the beds and beddings had that “old cabinet” smell. Thankfully, these beds did not reek of anything. The beds and big pillows were also soft and very comfortable.

The room also had a phone and a safe. We also appreciated the complimentary bottled water and coffee.

Even the bathroom was spacious. There were complimentary soap and shampoo inside along with clean towels. The bathroom was also equipped with hot and cold shower.

Overall, our stay at Paras beach resort was positive and enjoyable. The only criticism I have is its cost. like I mentioned, our room was P2,500 per night at the time (March last year) and that was too expensive for me even with all the amenities. If I’m not mistaken that superior rooms are what they call Amihan rooms now, then that’s even pricier at P4,000 per night. What a difference a year can make. I think the best option is the economy room or the Dormitory if you are a big group.

Will I stay here again if and when I return to Camiguin? With their old rates, probably. but now that it’s a lot more expensive, I’ll try to look for other accommodation. for what it’s worth, I think Paras beach resort remains the most trusted of all resorts in Camiguin.

Wine, gastronomy, boutique accommodations and a low-key vibe. Valle de Guadalupe offers this and much more making it an ideal travel destination for foodies and wine aficionados.

Located in Baja California, Mexico, this underrated area of the country is a great place for a fun weekend with friends, a romantic getaway, or for those who are simply wanting to eat good food and drink excellent wine.

The accommodations and restaurants blend almost seamlessly into the desert landscape, and you’ll almost always have dogs, cats and livestock nearby.

While it has quite a rustic, farm feel to it, visitors here seem to dress to impress.

You’ll spot tourists, photographers and “Instagrammers” dressed for the destination — wearing a desert-inspired colour palette that suits the scene.

We recently ate and drank our way through the Valle de Guadalupe (Guadalupe Valley) on a week-long trip and are already missing the region!

About Valle de Guadalupe

Most travellers to Mexico have heard about Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Mexico City, and Oaxaca, but surprisingly, Valle de Guadalupe remains somewhat hidden. For oenophiles, this is one of the best places to visit in Mexico.

Of the 14 wine regions in the country, this is Mexico’s best. The quality of wine in the Valle completely surprised us!

If you’re into big, bold, juicy, oaked reds, you will not be disappointed. but don’t worry if you’re not, there are some excellent white and rose wines as well.

The Valle de Guadalupe (Valle) has been producing wine for around 200 years, with this region contributing to 90% of the wine produced in the country. and while wine consumption may not be as popular in Mexico as beer and tequila, it’s getting there.

Vines and more vines
The area is also known for its stylish accommodations, sophisticated atmosphere, and awarded gastronomy — most of which are reached by driving down dusty, dirt roads.

With the Pacific ocean nearby, the area creates a microclimate of its own, which is similar to the Mediterranean. Grapes and other fruits and vegetables are easily grown here, while the seafood is pulled fresh from the ocean just 30 minutes away.

5 best Wineries in the Valley

Unlike other places in the world where we’ve travelled for wine, all of the wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe charge for tastings — anywhere from $10 – $50, usually for 4 small glasses.

It’s recommended to make a reservation for tastings, not only to ensure you get a spot, but to make sure they are open. weekends are busy, as are the summer months and holidays.

There are numerous wineries to explore and wines to sample, here’s a quick list of our favourites.

1. Baron Balch’e

If you’re into aged red wines, Baron Balch’e is your place. This well-known winery offers 18 different labels — 14 reds, 3 whites and 1 Clarette.

Included in the tasting is a tour of the cellar, which is a nice addition. There’s also a restaurant on-site. Baron Balch’e offers 5 different packages at different prices and levels of wine quality: A – E.

If you’re a red wine drinker, I recommend the premium tour “D” for 600 pesos ($30), or at the very least, tasting “C” for 330 pesos ($16.50). We lucked out and were given the tour by Norman who is an expert Sommelier. ask for him if you can!

2. Retorno

This super small, unassuming place is where to go for a chilled-out setting (ie: non-Instagram), but with a cool winemaker and fantastic reds. This is a great family-owned place.

The winemaker gave us barrel tastings, we sampled some newer wine out of the metal vat and enjoyed the conversation. Plus, Carlota the labrador dog was so sweet!

Tastings here are cost effective at 140 pesos ($7) for the basic or$200 ($12) for the complete. For whites, the Teo is oaky on the nose and slightly fruity to taste.

For reds, don’t miss sampling the Palabra, Retorno, and the Década (which celebrated the winery’s tenth anniversary) — all are oaked, dry, bold, and complex.

3. Relieve

Relieve is completely different from the two wineries above. This stylish, modern winery and vineyard is surrounded by rows of vines and has a nice patio available for a drink.

We had been enjoying wines by relieve while living in Playa del Carmen, so it was nice to be at the source!

The tastings here are 650 pesos and again, I recommend doing the premium tasting. The Tempranillo and Merlot are fantastic with lots of oak, deep red fruits, and a long finish. The Nebbiolo isn’t on the tasting menu but is a great bottle as well.

4. Don Tomás

The setting here is stunning. You can drink wine and have lunch at the tables that are completely surrounded by vines, or on one of the other decks.

We weren’t impressed with the lack of information provided with the tastings here, but the quality of wine made up for that. Also, a small cheese and bread board is included with the tastings — which is the only place in the Valley we found that.

The premium tasting is 400 pesos ($20) and included all red wines, while the basic is 250 pesos ($12.50).

5. Vena Cava

The hillside here was dug out to create a natural cooling system for the barrels. The tastings are held here as well.

A really cool feature of Vena Cava is the fishing boat which has been flipped upside down and acts as the roof. Vena Cava is all about recycling and reusing.

Sadly, when we visited they weren’t offering the premium tasting. We did enjoy the regular tasting and learned a lot about the winery from the guide.

After you’re done with the tastings, make sure to eat at the onsite food truck, Troika. order the oysters, cabbage, and mushroom risotto — you can thank me later.

The basic tasting is $18, two natural wines and two regular wines is $20, four natural wines is $35. If you want to do a premium tasting, you have to reserve in advance.

Other Must-Visit Wineries:

Montefiori (Vinos Paolini) – Mexican wines with an Italian heart is the slogan here. Italian winemaker who has been in Mexico since 1985. This is a classy setting with a nice view. 450 pesos ($22) for a premium tasting. find it on the map, here.

Emevé – modern winery, nice vineyard views. The explanation of the wines was informative and the wines are good as well. 250 pesos ($12) for 3 tastings, or 400 pesos ($19) for 4 tastings with a souvenir glass. Click here to see it on the map.

Cava Maciel – A small, more off-track winery that is definitely worth the visit. The explanation of the wines here is top-notch. The winemakers here are passionate, fun, and informative. We really enjoyed the wines. It’s 350 pesos ($17) for a basic tasting and 500 pesos ($24) for a premium one. find it here.

Viña de Frannes – one of the most gorgeous lunch and tasting settings! Viña de Frannes is one of the only places doing a Cabernet Franc with 12 months in French oak — it was fantastic. try the rib eye pizza and ceviche, all was so good. find it here.

Casta – another place that includes a cellar tour in the tasting. In fact, we actually did the tasting down in the cellar! πολύ ωραίο. The staff here were great and many details and information were given about the wines we were sampling. The wines here were quite nice as well. Tastings are between 200 – 400 pesos ($10 – $20). find it on the map here.

Magoni – lovely area under a huge oak tree. The Nebbiolos are good and they also offer a balsamic vinegar tasting. regular four tasting costs 220 pesos ($11), six tastings cost 280 ($14) and the reserva tasting with 4 wines and snacks costs 650 ($33).

Vinos Dubacano – our driver and his family actually own this tasting room, which is surrounded by vines. inside has sort of a bar feel to it, and while we sat at the counter, our driver explained their wine and we sampled many! Vinicola Kruger – Πρόκειται για ένα funky μέρος με μερικά τραπέζια και καρέκλες και ένα ανυψωμένο, μετατρεπόμενο εμπορευματοκιβώτιο για ένα καθιστικό στον τελευταίο όροφο. Οινοποιείο Emevé στο Valle de Guadalupe
Δεν επισκεφθήκαμε τα πιο εμπορικά οινοποιεία: El Cielo, Monte X’anic και La Cetto, αν και είναι δημοφιλείς.

1. Deckman’s

Ο σεφ Michelin Drew Deckman κατευθύνει την υπαίθρια κουζίνα εδώ. Εάν τρώτε μόνο σε ένα εστιατόριο, κάντε το αυτό και βεβαιωθείτε ότι είστε εκεί για να απολαύσετε το ηλιοβασίλεμα!

Το φαγητό και το ρύθμιση στο Deckman’s ήταν απίστευτα

Η ιδέα εδώ είναι τοπικά προερχόμενη, αγρόκτημα σε τραπέζι, αργό φαγητό. Είναι περιστασιακό, αλλά κομψό.

Παρακολουθήσαμε το ηλιοβασίλεμα πάνω από τον αμπελώνα και τα βουνά σε απόσταση ενώ κάθεται κάτω από ένα πανύψηλο πεύκο. Καθώς ο ήλιος κατέβηκε, τα φώτα νεράιδα αναβοσβήνουν πάνω από τα diners και την κουζίνα – δημιουργώντας μια μαγική σκηνή.

Σας προτείνω το λαβράκι της θάλασσας και τη σύντομη πλευρά για το δίκτυο και τα τεύτλα για έναν εκκινητή. Το φαγητό και η τοποθεσία είναι κορυφαία.

2. Finca Altozano

Ένα άλλο δημοφιλές σημείο για μεσημεριανό γεύμα ή δείπνο. Η ρύθμιση εδώ είναι απίστευτη και είναι ένα εξαιρετικό μέρος για να τραβήξετε φωτογραφίες και να απολαύσετε το ηλιοβασίλεμα πάνω από την κοιλάδα.

Είχαμε μόνο ένα ελαφρύ γεύμα εδώ από τη σαλάτα ριζότο και burrata για να μοιραστούμε, αλλά το φαγητό ήταν καλό, το εστιατόριο ήταν πραγματικά απασχολημένο και η υπαίθρια κουζίνα ήταν μεγάλη.

3. Πανίδα
